Nonviolent Communication in the Therapeutic Setting: An Introduction to NVC Empathy

Come get a taste of how much Nonviolent Communication (NVC) has to offer you and your clients! Developed in the nineteen sixties by Marshall Rosenberg, a psychologist and international peacemaker as well as a student of Carl Rogers, NVC is used in a wide variety of settings, including in war-torn countries, corporations, prisons, schools, families, and therapy offices. In this interactive presentation, we will focus on the many gifts NVC offers to therapists, with a special focus on learning and practicing NVC-style empathy, a simple yet profound way to give our clients a sense of being deeply heard, accepted, and understood.

Ali Miller, MA, MFT, is a licensed psychotherapist in private practice in Berkeley and San Francisco. In 2006, in addition to becoming licensed as an MFT, she also came across the profound teachings of Nonviolent Communication, and her life and work haven’t been the same since. As a therapist, Ali is particularly passionate about sharing the healing power of NVC with other mental health clinicians, and does so as a conference presenter, consultant at local agencies, and writer for Psyched in San Francisco. In addition, she has been a member of the leadership team of BayNVC’s Immersion Program for the past several years and also co-facilitates a weekly NVC class in San Francisco through The Communication Dojo. She is a graduate of the Open-Hearted Therapy NVC Program for Therapists and has been integrating NVC into her clinical work for eight years. www.AliMillerMFT.com.

The fee for Wednesday workshops is $5 for members; $10 for non-members. Saturday workshops include a $10 member or $20 non-member fee.

Please RSVP to ceu@eastbaytherapist.org so we know for how many attendees we need to prepare space and nourishment.
